5 Signs Your Brake Pads Need Changing

Brakes rarely fail without warning. Pads wear down gradually, and your car usually tells you when they are close to the end. Here are five signs worth acting on.
What to listen and feel for
- A high-pitched squeal when you brake: most pads carry a small metal tab that squeals on purpose once the friction material is thin.
- A grinding noise: metal is touching the disc. Stop driving on it and have it checked straight away.
- A longer stopping distance, or a brake pedal that sinks lower than usual.
- Vibration through the pedal or the steering wheel, which often means the discs are worn as well.
- The car pulling to one side when you brake, a common sign of uneven wear or a sticking caliper.
How often to check
Look at your pads at every oil change. City traffic, heavy loads and mountain roads wear them faster. Replace the pads on both sides of the axle together, and ask us for the right set for your make, model and year.
